RESIDENTS – TOM

I’m Tom, non-binary, from over the water in Wirral. I grew up in the lush micro-climate council estate of Leasowe, have gardened and watched wildlife since I can remember. As a kid, the only place my queerness was ever reflected was in nature, I never felt safe enough to express myself anywhere in Merseyside.

A lot has changed with many queer spaces erupting here and there, but the reliance on alcohol and the commercialisation of pride has cast a shadow on these positives. Alongside this is the threat of the potential Tidal Barrage development in the Mersey, which will destroy the recovering river and affect the whole environment and culture of our area, resulting in pollution and flooding that will hit minorities and working-class people the hardest. But I love the rebellious nature of the communities here and the willingness to  speak up against injustice, and that gives me hope for the Mersey region.
