RESIDENTS BY MING DE NASTY
KAY
I live in Liverpool and have just reached the frightening age of 70!
It took me a very long time to accept who I am, but I have come to terms with things by identifying as “two-spirited”. I feel like I’m two separate people (one male, one female) sharing the same body. I did not know I was within the “trans” spectrum until the age of 35. It was both wonderfully life-changing, but also very scary and confusing for me, having always thought of myself as hetero masculine. So, I know that I’m pretty unusual within the trans community.
Liverpool, what can I say? I hate any form of jingoism, but I spent the 80s living in the South West. It took me a while to realise that the values that I grew up with in Liverpool were not universally shared. The 80s… Thatcher! In my opinion, the anti-Christ. Yet, she was almost universally praised where I was living throughout that decade. So… yeah. I’m really happy to live in Liverpool which generally celebrates diversity. Gerry Marsden’s song, “Ferry across the Mersey”, sums up the Scouse attitude pretty well.
